Sexual Harassment Cases Will Increase Nationwide Due to Harvey Weinstein

On Friday, WTAE interviewed KM&A attorneys, Danielle Parks, Sean Ruppert, and Prabhu Narahari, about the influx of women, celebrities and non-celebrities, speaking out against the sexual harassment occurring in Hollywood. The question is, “will it inspire Pittsburgh victims to file claims or share their stories?”

We, at KM&A, believe it will.

Danielle Parks, KM&A litigation attorney, explained, “It’s showing women that it’s not just happening just to them, it’s happening to other women as well, and if other women are speaking out then they have the confidence to speak out as well.” The sexual harassment allegations in the entertainment industry is paving the way for women to know how to respond in their own situations.

After all, some women don’t recognize certain, inappropriate actions for what they are—sexual harassment. Our society has often normalized and laughed about such actions. Men and women begin to believe that this is just normal. And it’s not. Sexual harassment is wrong, and victims should fight for their rights.

As men and women speak up against all types of sexual harassment in the entertainment industry, everyday people recognize how they, too, have experienced sexual harassment in the workplace.

“We’ve gotten a lot of calls describing the kinds of harassment that’s become more popular or more noticed in the media recently.” Sean Ruppert, KM&A partner, shared.“We’ve gotten a lot of calls describing the kinds of harassment that’s become more popular or more noticed in the media recently.” Sean Ruppert, KM&A partner, shared. “Too often employers treat this like a dispute between two people who have equal points of view and try to mediate it rather than investigating the claims as with one person as a victim and the other person as a perpetrator.”

Over the last few weeks, the allegations and admissions about the prevalence of sexual harassment in the entertainment and political world leaves shocked viewers everywhere. Once the victims spoke out against Harvey Weinstein, other victims have stepped up to reveal their own stories and accusations about other influential, high profile people. This avalanche of accusations of sexual harassment cannot be ignored.

Employment law protects employees from sexual harassment and abuse. Men and women who speak up against those who have harassed them will discover that the law is on their side.
